Vairochana Buddha, also known as Mahāvairocana or Dainichi Nyorai in Japanese, is a central figure in the Esoteric or Tantric Buddhism of Japan, China, and Tibet. In this tradition, Vairochana is regarded as the universal and all-pervading Buddha, representing the essence of the universe and the primordial wisdom that underlies all existence. The name "Vairochana" is derived from the Sanskrit word "vairocana," which means "to shine forth" or "to illuminate." This name reflects the Buddha's role as the illuminator of all things, the one who sheds light on the true nature of reality and the ultimate reality of emptiness. He is typically depicted with a white or golden complexion, symbolizing the purity and radiance of his wisdom. Vairochana Buddha is also associated with the Dharmakaya, the ultimate reality or absolute nature of the Buddha. This aspect of Vairochana represents the transcendent wisdom that lies beyond all concepts and dualities, and is the goal of Buddhist practice. In addition to his role as the universal Buddha, Vairochana is also associated with the sun and the element of space. He is sometimes depicted with a sun-disc behind his head, and his teachings are said to illuminate the darkness of ignorance and lead beings to enlightenment.

In Esoteric Buddhism, Vairochana is a central figure in the practices of meditation and visualization, which are used to cultivate wisdom and awareness of the true nature of reality. By meditating on the image of Vairochana Buddha, practitioners seek to connect with his transcendent wisdom and realize their own true nature as Buddha. Through his teachings and practices, he offers a path to enlightenment and liberation from suffering.
