Palden Lhamo is a powerful and revered female protector deity in Tibetan Buddhism. She is known as the "Glorious Goddess" or the "Protectress of Tibet," and is often depicted riding a mule and wielding a trident in one hand and a skull cup in the other. Palden Lhamo is also associated with the ashtamangala, or the Eight Auspicious Symbols, which are a set of sacred symbols that represent the Noble Eightfold Path of Buddhism. The Eight Auspicious Symbols consist of the parasol, the pair of golden fish, the conch shell, the endless knot, the lotus flower, the victory banner, the wheel, and the treasure vase. Each of these symbols has a unique meaning and significance in Buddhist teachings, and they are often used in religious ceremonies and iconography. Palden Lhamo is typically depicted holding a set of the Eight Auspicious Symbols, symbolizing her role as a protector and guide for those who follow the Buddhist path. She is believed to offer protection and assistance to those who are devoted to her and is often invoked in rituals and prayers for healing, prosperity, and spiritual guidance. In Tibetan Buddhist iconography, Palden Lhamo is often depicted with her consort, Mahakala, who is also a protector deity. Together, they represent the union of wisdom and compassion, and the balance of masculine and feminine energies.

Palden Lhamo with astamangala is an important symbol in Tibetan Buddhism, representing the power and protection of the divine feminine, and the essential teachings of the Buddhist path.

The eight auspicious symbols are depicted in the painting surrounding Palden Lhamo. These symbols are:

  • The Parasol: This symbol represents protection from suffering and is often depicted as a colorful umbrella.
  • The Golden Fish: This symbol represents fertility and abundance and is often depicted as two fish, one swimming upward and the other downward.
  • The Treasure Vase: This symbol represents spiritual and material abundance and is often depicted as a vase with jewels spilling from its mouth.
  • The Lotus: This symbol represents purity and enlightenment and is often depicted as a pink or white lotus flower.
  • The Conch Shell: This symbol represents the teachings of the Buddha and is often depicted as a white or pink shell.
  • The Endless Knot: This symbol represents the interconnectedness of all things and is often depicted as a knot with no beginning or end.
  • The Victory Banner: This symbol represents the victory of the Buddha's teachings over ignorance and is often depicted as a banner or flag.
  • The Dharma Wheel: This symbol represents the Buddha's teachings and is often depicted as a wheel with eight spokes.
