Amitabha Buddha, also known as Amitayus or Amida Buddha, is a central figure in Mahayana Buddhism, particularly in Pure Land Buddhism. Amitabha is revered as the Buddha of Infinite Light and Infinite Life, representing compassion, wisdom, and enlightenment. According to Buddhist scriptures, Amitabha Buddha presides over the Pure Land, a realm of enlightenment that is described as a blissful and tranquil paradise. The Pure Land is believed to be accessible to all beings who sincerely chant or recite Amitabha's name, expressing their faith and devotion. By doing so, they aspire to be reborn in Amitabha's Pure Land, where they can attain liberation from the cycle of birth and death and eventually reach enlightenment. The concept of Amitabha Buddha and the Pure Land is rooted in the belief that enlightenment in the present age is particularly challenging due to the prevalence of suffering and distractions. Amitabha, through his infinite compassion, created the Pure Land as a compassionate response to help sentient beings achieve liberation. Devotion to Amitabha Buddha and the practice of reciting his name, known as the Nembutsu, is a core aspect of Pure Land Buddhism. The Nembutsu is considered a simple yet powerful practice, where devotees repeat the mantra "Namo Amitabha Buddha" or "Namo Amida Butsu" with sincerity and reverence. It is believed that through the power of Amitabha's vow and compassion, individuals can be reborn in the Pure Land and continue their spiritual journey toward enlightenment. The teachings of Amitabha Buddha emphasize the universality of his compassion, extending to all beings regardless of their past actions or spiritual attainments. Amitabha is regarded as a guiding figure who encourages individuals to embrace the path of virtue, mindfulness, and the cultivation of loving-kindness. Artistic representations of Amitabha Buddha often depict him in a meditative posture, radiating a warm and compassionate aura. He is portrayed with a serene expression and is often adorned with a crown or a halo of light, symbolizing his enlightened nature. In some depictions, Amitabha holds a lotus flower, representing purity and spiritual awakening.

Amitabha Buddha's teachings and the practice of Pure Land Buddhism have gained significant popularity in East Asia, particularly in Japan, China, and Korea. Pure Land temples, such as the famous Jodo-ji Temple in Japan, are dedicated to the worship and propagation of Amitabha's teachings.
